Isadora Duncan (1878-1927):

Isadora Duncan was the famous American dancer, as well as the founder of modern dance. She was the first one who performed barefoot on stage.

Duncan loves dance, and showed a strong dance talent since childhood. However, she did not receive any formal dance education, since she could not bear the strict boring stylized teaching method of ballet. The technique of Ballet was too mechanization, besides to show off skills, the whole form and content cannot express the profound feelings. Duncan absorbed inspiration from ancient Greece, where is the origin of the Western culture. She put on a white robe, took her shoes off, and expressed the praise to life and nature. She not only promoted the development of modern dance, but also led to innovations of classical ballet. She said that dance was a great original art, which can wake up the other kind of arts.

1899, Duncan began touring in Europe. In 1921, on the fourth anniversary of "October revolution", she traveled to Moscow, and danced in the Bolshoi Theatre.
In the end, Lenin stood up and applauded for her, she then performed dance "The Internationale", causing the chorus of entire audience. Duncan later joined the Soviet citizenship.

At a small party, Duncan and her Sergei Yesenin loved at first sight, and then married. But divorced a few years later.

In September 14, 1927, after the party in France, on the way back to home, Duncan’s long scarf twisted into the wheel. Although the car immediately stopped, she neck still fractured, and died at the age of 50.

My point of view:

Duncan’s healthy strong body, big running jump dance, is the symbols of the new century. She was the forerunner of modern dance and new women. She was a huge legend.

  1. Isadora Duncan’s dancing style was inspired by art and the Greek culture. Her costumes, as well as techniques, were based on these two (art and Greek culture). She used to visit museums in Europe and the United States where she analyzed paintings and sculptures; thereby, coming up with a dancing technique. Duncan looked for her dancing style in poetry, nature, and music. Her style was not based on looking for physical skills, but on the link between her feelings and thought with the possible movement they can generate .

  2. Her dance is relaxed, light and joful. I suddenly think that Isdora Duncan's dance is similar with hip hop because they are all for freedom. Although two dance presents totally different, they show me the spirit that is lifeful and freedom.

  3. I think her dance escaped from artificial aspects of classic dance and expressed internal feeling of human beings naturally. Her dance delivers a deep inside message for a certain thing as well as containing technical beauty.

  5. It is really fun to watching Duncan’s performance in the video that author provide. The music and the movement are really cute. It is kind of like a child dancing on the stage but it is not childish. I think she was trying to represents a pure and happy childhood
